*Reflective Statement*

To me this standard means that the teacher creates relationships with other professionals as well as parents and the community.  By creating relationships this helps the teacher to become better in touch with the community as well as their students.  This is an important standard because by having good relationships the teacher can help their students when necessary with things such as possible scholarships, jobs, or out of school tutoring.

*Revised Reflective Statement - Fall 2008*

Having positive relationships with school colleagues, parents, and agencies in the community are imperative to supporting students' learning and well being.  Parent teacher relationships should not be built entirely upon negative exchanges, calling a students parent to inform them that their child did well on a report or exam is a great way to start a parent teacher relationship.  Keeping the parent in the loop about their students positives as well as their short comings helps to create an alliance and an keep avenues of communication open between parents and teachers.  This is vital to a student's well being and learning.  By having a postive relationship with the parents educators are creating an alliance and helping to ensure that students are getting positive support from their parents with their education.  Having a postive relationship with school colleagues enables an educator to help students in all aspects of school.  If a students is having problems with peers or at home a teacher with a good relationship with school colleagues will be able to utilize those positive relationships to help the student.  Fostering a relationship with agenicies within the larger community is also imperative for students learning and well being.  Some students might be placed in detention centers, foster homes, or alternative care facilities.  By having a positive relationship with these agencies teachers can ensure that students education will not be affected as well as know that the student is being taking care of and be assured of their well-being.  Teachers can also use these relationships to help students with after school jobs, tutoring, and even scholarships for extended education.

*My Personal Experience*

When applying for scholarships for college I had a few teachers who helped me find scholarships and apply for scholarships. Some of them even helped me get in touch with people outside the school who they were friends with who they thought could help me get scholarships.

*Artifact Rationale*

This slide show presentation was created to show how teachers can better interact and work with families and communities. This presentation was put together by myself however the information was compiled by myself and the other people in  my group. I believe that this presentation exemplifies INTASC 10 because not only does it stress the importance of the teachers involvement in the community but it also gives examples of how a teacher can better become involved with parents and the community.  By doing this presentation I learned how valuable it can be for a teacher to be involved with people in the community as well as the parents of their students I know that I still have a lot to learn on how important it is for teachers to communicate openly with the community and parents, but I believe because of this group project I have  a much better understanding of the obstacles facing teachers and students today.  This presentation is a wonderful example of INTASC standard 10.

This project outlines the important role educators play in the lives of students, their families, and the community.  Effective and continual communication between parents and educators help students to know that everyone is on the same page.  Everyone is looking out for the best interest of the student.  With good communication, which means calling home when a student is excelling not just went they are failing, parents are able to help students at home with their problems and give positive reinforcement for excelling.  In this artifact I discuss the importance of parent - teacher communication and different ways in which parents can foster that relationship.  Sending home letters of introduction and updates on students progress, calling home to discuss a students progress both positive and negative, and holding open houses inviting the parents into the classroom are just a few ways that teachers can foster positive relationships with students and their families.  This artifact also discusses various ways a teacher can reach out into the community, such as volunteering, coaching, and staying late for tutoring are just a few ways to foster a better relationship with the community.  It is vital to the well being of students that teachers, families, and the community are all working together to create a postive environment for students.
