INTASC 3

The teacher understands how students differ in their approaches to
learning and creates instructional opportunities that are adapted to
diverse learners.

*Reflective Statement*

To me this means that the teacher must understand that each student learns differently and therefore must be taught differently in order to learn. The teacher must be willing to embrace different ideas and think outside the box in order to help their students succeed in learning.  This standard is important because each student is a different person and learns differently. If the teacher only teaches in one way not all of the students will be able to learn. Teachers should try to do everything in their power to help students learn and grow.

*Revised Reflective Statement - Fall 2008*

This INTASC principle is addressing not only various learning styles but also is discussing various learning challenges.  While it is important for teachers to understand that every student learns differently, such as auditory learners, verbal learners, people who learn better by doing, and people who learn better by watching, there will also be students in the classroom that have challenges in learning.  Some students might have learning disabilities that the teacher must be aware of in order to help the student face the challenges that other students might not face in the classroom and make accomodations to help their students learn.  It is vital that teachers understand the different forms of learning and how to address those in the classroom.  By varying the different teaching approaches teachers enable their students to learn in different ways that might be more accomodating to them, making lessons and information easier for students to understand and then demonstrate.  By creating a slideshow presentation and then reinforcing that slideshow presentation by verbally discussing the information from the slideshow and having students fill out a worksheet during the slideshow presentation a teacher is addressing three different forms of learning all at once, giving students a better chance to retain the content being presented to them.  A good educator must be aware of various learning styles and be sure to present various forms of teaching in order to accomodate the individuality of their students.

*My Personal Experience*

My high school drama teacher knew that each student was a different person who learned in different ways. During the first week of school this teacher administered a learning evaluation test to each student and after giving us our results back she then told us how we each learned best. She also gave us ideas on which study techniques would be best for us depending on how we learned. This teacher would also present each lesson in a different form in order for people who learned differently to be able to understand the lesson.

*Artifact Rationale*

This artifact is my second observation that shows the diversity in the classroom.  In this observation I entered a classroom with the intention of observing how diversity is handled in the classroom.  This diversity ranged from ethnicity, gender, and even learning.  Its a proven fact that not all students learn in the exact same way. There are many different tests that can be given to help teachers and students to better understand the different ways that people learn.  I believe that this observation truely helped me understand that there is a lot of diversity in the world from different genders and religions to differences in how people learn.  I believe that this observation is a wonderful example of INTASC 3 because it shows the differences in the classroom and how one specific teacher addressed the diversity. I believe that this was a wonderful learning tool and it helped me learn about all kinds of diversity and not just learning differences, although I know that there is still much for me to learn in regards to diversity in the classroom I believe this has been a very big step in the right direction. During this observation the teacher used various forms of presenting information to help adapt to students various learning styles.  The students were working on a project of some type and the teacher presented information in three different forms, reading the information out loud, presenting the information on an overhead projector, and having students draw pictures after having listened to the presentation.  This teacher was adressing the various forms of learning that his student's experience.  In this observation I note how the teacher understood that students learn differently and presents information in various forms to adress those different learning styles.  This clearly exemplifies INTASC 3 standard on understanding the importance of diverse teaching and learning styles in the classroom.  Throughout my classes at Ball State I have learned the importance of diverse teaching to adress various learning styles in the classroom and I believe that this artifact clearly shows that.
