*Reflective Statement*

To me this standard means that the teacher plans well rounded curriculums that covers subject matter,  meets state and curriculum standards, and keeps students interested and the community involved.  The teacher should make sure that their lesson plans are created keeping in mind what is in the best interest of the students.  It is very important for teachers to master this standard because by planning ahead and creating lessons that are well rounded will ensure that students learn what they need to learn.

*Revised Reflective Statement - Fall 2008*

The backbone of any good classroom is a good lesson plan.  In creating lesson plans teachers must keep many things in mind, starting with State Standards and curriculum goals can be great building blocks in creating meaningful lesson plans.  Other important aspects that teachers must keep in mind when creating lessons for the classroom is knowledge of subject matter on both the students and teachers behalfs.  Do students have prior knowledge that I can build upon in this lesson?  Will I be able to make meaningful connections between the lesson in this unit plan?  Will students need more background information on this subject before introducing this lesson plan?  Are all great questions that teachers should ask themselves as they are building lesson plans for their classrooms.   It is also imperative for teachers to keep their students in mind when creating lessons.  Each student and each classroom are different, a lesson that will work well in one classroom might not be as effective in another classroom.  Knowing students limitations and capabilities is important to keep in mind when creating effective lesson plans.   It is also important to know and understand the community in which your teaching when creating lesson plans for the classroom.  How does this lesson relate to my students community?  Will they understand what I am discussing if it does not relate to their community? Will I receive community support with this lesson plan from the community?  Does this lesson align with the values held by my students community?  These are all very important questions a teacher should pose to themself when trying to create effective lesson plans for their classrooms.

*My Personal Experience*

In high school one of my teachers consistently made very detailed lesson plans which she followed word for word every single day. At the beginning of each grading period she would hand out to us the exact same copy of the lesson plan that she had. It detailed what we were going to read, review, what homework we were going to have, everything we were going to do in class each day. It was really helpful to know what we were doing each day and what was due each day in that class. I really wish all of my teachers had done that for us.
