INTASC 8
The teacher understands and uses formal and informal assessment
strategies to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social
and physical development of the learner.

*Reflective Statement*
To me this standard means that teachers should be able to assess how
their students are doing, not just in the classroom, at any given time
using either formal assessments such as test or homework grades or
informal assessments such as the students behavior in class or attitude
towards teachers and other students. This is a very important standard
for teachers to master because it goes to the core of a students well
being. If there is something wrong with the student, such problems at
home or illness, the teacher will notice and be able to help the
student.
*Revised Reflective Statement - Fall 2008*
Evaluating students progress and
development is an important aspect of education. The use of
informal and formal assessments are imperative to teachers abilities to
ensure the continuous intellectual, social, and physical
development. Assessing students growth intellectually through
assessment is not nearly as difficult as evaluating their growth
socially and physically. Assigning group work throughout the
course and watching as students interact with their peers, evaluating
their abilities to interact, contribute, and grow are all important
forms of assessment of their development socially. Their physical
development as a learner can be assessed by ensuring that students are
not in failing health, determine if they are participating in
activities that might hurt their physical development such as drugs,
alcohol, or other unhealthy habits. This can be one of the most
challenging aspects of a teachers job and is not always possible but by
being aware and using various forms of assesment teachers can
potentially help their students when they are failing in their
assessments.
*My Personal Experience*
My junior year of high school I was very sick and I fell asleep in one
of my teachers classes. This was very unusual behavior for me and so my
teacher approached me about it and when I explained that I was not
feeling well she advised me to talk to a doctor about it. I took her
advice and talked to a doctor and it turned out that I was seriously
ill and needed some medication. In the end I was better off because my
teacher was assertive enough to realise that something was wrong with
me by use of informal assessment.
