The teacher is a reflective practitioner who continually evaluates the
effects of his/her choices and actions on others (students, parents,
and other professionals in the learning community) and who actively
seeks out opportunities to grow professionally.
*Reflective Statement*
To me this standard means that the teacher must be willing and able to
reflect on the impact that they have had on other people, good and bad,
and be willing to grow from their experiences. I believe that
this is an important standard because people must learn from their
mistakes in order to succeed in the future. Teachers must be willing to
admit when they have done wrong and learn from their own examples.
However they should also realise when they have made good decisions and
impacted people's lives for the better and try their best to be able to
help other people in the future.
*Revised Reflective Statement - Fall
2008*
Education and education reform is ever
changing, growing, expanding. In order to stay in the loop and
keep up to date on the different teaching strategies it is imperative
for teachers to attend in service days, attend teaching conferences,
and read articles on new teaching strategies. If teachers do not
continue with their own education in their content area as well as in
the field of education it will be impossible for them to stay up to
date on the newest teaching strategies and techniques. Teachers
must also be willing to grow from the experiences that they have
everyday inside and out of the classroom. By continually
evaluating the impact that their decisions and actions have on their
students, community, and peers teachers can learn and grow from the
mistakes as well as their sucesses. It takes a person truely
willing to growing as an individual and professional to admit when they
are wrong and make a mistake, but it is just as important to learn from
that mistake as it is to admit to it. It is also important to
look at the sucesses and evaluate what made them sucesses and how to
replicate those sucesses in other areas.
*My Personal
Experience*
Many people have had important impacts on my life. Some of them were
teachers, some of them were coaches, and some of them were simply
friends. I can think of one particular experience where one of my
teachers tried to help me with my photography for an entire year. I was
trying very hard and yet I could never seem to make a single photo come
out right but this teacher stood by my side for the entire frustrating
year, always encouraging me and always trying to help me. My second
year in his class all of his teaching and all of his encouragement paid
off, that and the fact that I learned how to turn the camera on. I
finally started printing good pictures but in the end it was because I
didn't give up. I could have given in to my discouragement and not
taken the class the second year but because of my teacher and his
continual encouragement I didn't give up on myself and photography is
now one of my favorite activities.
